Athenians

With visual and audio material recorded in Athens in 2014, Athenians functions as a deconstructed documentary. Its main focus is set on the classical philosophical controversy over free will and social determinism. Spinning like a merry-go-round, the videos show street views of five different city environments. Testimonies question the importance of politics and of social environment in the formation of the individual, and as urban landscapes are shown, a virtual discussion between all participants is created.
Developed in correspondence to James Joyce’s Dubliners, this work’s main thematic is set on the political nature of mankind. Dubliners was published at a turning point in European history. Written shortly before the Irish revolution, the search for a national identity and purpose was raging, and this particular aspect can also be observed nowadays in Greece, where the population is at a crossroads of history and culture, jolted by various converging ideas and influences.
